Is carpet the right choice for your home?
Posted by admin on August 25th, 2008 filed in GeneralThere are many misconceptions when it comes to health and maintenance issues concerning carpet in your home. Many people blame carpet for causing allergies, asthma, and other health conditions but when you look closely at the FACTS…the FACTS show that carpet is one of the best flooring surfaces you can put into your home.
Let’s take a look at some of the FACTS when it comes to carpet:
1. Carpet is a safer flooring surface than tile and grout, wood floors, and vinyl. This is absolutely true. Think about this. Which flooring surface would you rather have your kids fall and hit their head on. The obvious choice is the surface that is MUCH softer! Carpet, in the residential setting, has a pad underneath it and is softer than other flooring surfaces to begin with. Falling on carpet lessons the risk of serious injury.
2. Is it easier to slip and fall on carpet, wood floors, or vinyl? Again the obvious answer is that wood floors, tile and grout, and vinyl are much easier to slip and fall on. Rarely would anyone ever slip on carpet!
3. Which flooring surface contributes to a healthier indoor air quality when kept reasonably clean? The answer is carpet! Carpets act like a huge filter, they trap and hold almost everything that is brought into your home. They trap and hold these comtaminants BELOW ankle level and all you have to do is vacuum the carpet to remove most of those contaminants. With wood floors, tile and grout, and vinyl the contaminants are dispersed much more easily into your breathing zone, which is not good.
There have been numerous studies done that show carpet actually contributes to healthy indoor air quality. So why do some doctors continue to advise their patients to take carpet out of their home? Because they are terribly misinformed. Carpeting is good for indoor air quality.
Besides the indoor air quality issues the other reason to seriously carpet for your home is appearance. Today carpet comes in so many different colors and styles that it is near impossibe to not be able to find something that goes with any decor. There is no other flooring surface around that offers as many colors and styles that carpet offers.
Carpet can also be far less exensive to buy and maintain than other flooring surfaces, especially wood and tile and grout. Carpet is not hard to maintain. Regular vacuuming goes a long ways to keeping your carpet looking good. Do regular spot and spill pickup and have your carpets cleaned on a regular basis by a quality professional company and you should be able to keep your carpet looking great for many years to come.
Wood floors can be VERY expensive to maintain and when the grout in your tile floors gets really dirty it can be extremely difficult to get that soil out. Wood floors and tile and grout have their place, but when you stack up the pluses and minuses of all the flooring surfaces carpet is really difficult to beat.
