One of the most common stains that can occur in a carpet is blood, and it is actually one of the easiest stains to get out of your carpet if you follow the procedure we are going to discuss. But first you must take some precautions when dealing with human blood.

If you know the blood is human you need to wear gloves when dealing with it. If the blood is from one of your pets you should still wear gloves but it probably is not quite as important to do so. But wear the gloves anyway!

Also, there is a major difference between a few blood spots and an area that is saturated with blood. If the blood has soaked the carpet and is into the backing, padding, or sub floor you need to remove the carpet, or at least a section of it, and the padding. NO exceptions!

The first thing you want to do should be obvious but we run into a lot of people that ignore this step. Get the spot as fast as you can. Do not let it sit in the carpet for a long time. Not only is that gross but it makes the blood harder to get out. So get to the spot fast.

Second, you have to try and get as much of the blood out as you can be either blotting it out or rinsing it away with a small extraction machine. Do NOT use hot water to do this. The water should be cold to barely lukewarm.

Once you are convinced that you have gotten as much of the blood out as possible then this next step is what will remove the rest of the blood. Closely follow this next step. Take some hydrogen peroxide and lightly spray the blood spot with it. Get enough on to dampen the fibers. Once you have done that then blot some more. Really blot it good.

After you have blotted the spot really good then apply some more hydrogen peroxide to the spot and let it sit for as long as it needs to sit until the spot is out. Sometimes this happens really fast, other times it can take an hour or so. Once the blood spot is not visable then take some warm water and rinse the spot thoroughly.

Brown bottle hydrogen peroxide can be bought at almost any grocery store in town and it will work 99% of the time. If you want to get a bit more aggressive you can get 20 or 30 volume hydrogen peroxide at your hairsdressor or Sally’s Beauty Supply. The more aggressive hydrogen peroxide will usually work faster.
